Panamik and Disket

From Leh cross over Khadung la pass (5602) into Nubra valley which lies on the banks of Shyok and Nubra rivers, was an important halting centre on the treaty road or caravan route as it was called in ancient times. This was duty free corridor for the items like silk, pearls, gold and silver in the shape of a horse-hoof called yam-boo, between Turkistan and India. Nubra valley is drained by Shyok and Nubra rivers. Therefore, it is more fertile / green. The main crops are millet, buckwheat and onions, also there are numerous orchards of the apple and apricots. About ninety percent of its population is Buddhist, rest are Muslims. After exploring the valley and monasteries, we return to Leh for onward journeys.

DAY 01 LEH – PANAMIK Drive 150

From Leh the road gradually climbs Khardugla Pass (5602 M.), believed to be second highest motor able pass in the World, which commands fantastic view of Stok Kangri and surrounding peaks. From the pass descend down to Khardang and Khasar villages, continue the journey along the left bank of the river Shayok until Koyak bridge, here cross the river Shayok, drive a short distance along the right bank of the river, which is joined by river Nubra. From here continue along the left bank of river Nubra through picturesque villages including Trith and Lagjung. En-route to Panamik halt at Sumer to visit Samthaling monastery. Two nights sat in a camp / guest houses around Panamik.

Note: The accommodation at camp or a guest house along the road.

After breakfast drive to Kubed Bridge, cross over to the right bank of river Nubra and walk up to Insa monastery and Old Palace, on the way back explore other villages as well as the hot springs. Whole afternoon is free for relaxing and further exploration.

After breakfast leave and drive back to Koyak Bridge, continue the journey along the left bank of river Shayok until Disket, arrive and check-in a camp / guest house here for one night.

Disket is the sub divisional head quarter of Nubra valley, situated on the left bank of river Shayok at the altitude of 2990 Mts., surrounded by light forest and fruit orchards. In the afternoon explore the Disket monastery and the market area.

In the morning, after breakfast, drive a short distance to Hunder, visit the small monastery and village and return to Disket, en-route halt at Sand Dunes, give a look at the Bactrian double hump camel, a short joyride against a nominal payment will be a good option, and it could help the owners in up- keeping them. Pangong Lake

Pangong Lake, at an altitude of 4,267 Mt. is a narrow long basin of inland drainage, six to seven Km. at its widest point and 130 Km. Long, bisected by the international border between India and China. We can go up to seven kilometers, as far as Spangmik village, which falls on southern shore. It affords spectacular views of mountains of Changchenmo range to north, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake's brackish waters. Above the Spangmik are snow-capped peaks of Pangong range. The villages along the southern shore are the summer home of a scanty population of Chang-pa, the nomadic herds' people of Tibet and south-east Ladakh. The route passes by picturesque Shey and Thisy, turns off the Indus valley by the side-valley of Chemrey and Sakti. The Ldakh range is crossed by the Chang-la (5,475Mt.) which despite great height is one of the easier passes. The major town across this pass is Tangtse, from there onwards are various picturesque villages and hamlets.

Leave in the morning, drive along the river Indus until Karu, here turn left towards Chemri monastery and start gradual climb to Chang la pass (17350 ft.) the weather at the pass could turn hostile anytime, it could snow here, even in peak summer. From pass we descend, reach Tsoltak and Tso, at one of these places, we may enjoy our pack lunch. Further descending would take us to major townships of this region, Durbok to Tangtse, after a brief halt at these places, we continue our journey via picturesque village to Lukung, the first end of the lake Pangong, we drive further few kilometers to Spanmik, the last point, we are allowed to go. Arrive Spanmik by afternoon, check-in at camp/ a guest house for overnight stay. Remainder of the afternoon will be spent in exploring and enjoying the beauty this unique Lake.

In the morning enjoy the unforgettable and unusual scenery of the lake and the landscape, in the late morning, we leave and drive back to Leh, en-route if time allows and permission granted, we may visit the remote Shashukul monastery around Durbok. In the late afternoon arrive at Leh and check- in at the hotel.

Tsomorari and Tsokar Lakes

Leave after an early breakfast, take the Leh - Manali highway until Upshi, from here the road branches off and turn left, continue towards Chumathang, a small township famous for its sulphur hot springs, we stop here to visit hot springs and lunch. Later we proceed to Mahi, until here the road switches back and forth from left to right banks of river Indus. At Mahi, we cross over to the left bank of river and ascend the Puga valley through narrow gorge, which opens up at Puga village (Tibetan refuge settlement), here turn left and continue to ascend up to a small pass called Namshangla, then a short descend to Tso Morari lake. We estimate to arrive for late lunch to Tsomorari. In the afternoon, explore the lake and visit Karzok monastery.

Korzok village and Tsomorari Lake are situated at 4572 Mt. above sea level, consists of about a dozen houses and a Gompa, is the only permanent settlement in Rupshu. Most of the other inhabitants are nomadic Chang-pas shepherds, who live in tent year round, moving between the pastures. There are a few barley fields at Korzok must be among the highest cultivation in the world, but there is no guarantee that the crop will ripen every year. The wildlife includes Kyang-the wild ass, Marmots, Hares and an unusual tail less rat. The Tsomorari Lake is breeding ground for numerous species of birds. Chief among them are the Bar headed Goose, great crested Grebe, the Brahamani Duck, and the brown headed Gul.

Complete morning for further exploration of the Tsomorari Lake and Korzok village. After lunch leave for Tsokar Lake, we descend down to Sumda in Puga Valley, from here ascend a small pass called “Polo Kong ki - la” about 5030 Mt. then descend down to Tsokar Lake, if time allows, we may visit Thokjay monastery. Arrive Tsokar by late afternoon and check-in a camp for overnight stay.

Early in the morning, explore this almost dry lake and look for bird life, return to camp for breakfast, thereafter leave for Leh. After a short drive from Tsokar, we arrive at Dibring, here the road connects to Leh – Manali highway, now ascend up to Taglangla pass (17582 ft.), the highest point of this highway. From the pass road descends sharply to hamlet of Rumtse, thereon continue along the left bank river until Upshi, which is at the confluence of this river with river Indus. Then proceed on to Leh, arrive at Leh and check – in at the hotel.
